The Process of Getting Dental Implants
You should expect the entire process to be longer than any other teeth replacement solution. This is because it is an involved process. It requires at least one surgical procedure, many appointments, and lots of healing time.
To qualify for teeth implants, you should be in good overall health. You should be free of additional dental issues, and have enough bone tissue to support the fixtures. Additionally, if you smoke, we highly recommend quitting because smoking significantly raises your risk of implant failure. You also need to have healthy gums and not have gum disease.
The process begins with a consultation with our general dentist. Then, there is the placement procedure. Next we attach the abutment. Lastly, our dentist attaches the final restoration.
Consultation
The purpose of the consultation is for our implant dentist to determine if you qualify for dental implants. First, we will examine your mouth and medical history. The current state of your oral health is very important for the dental implant procedure to be very successful. For example, we will need to treat problems such as gums disease and bone loss first if we discover them.
It’s not abnormal for a patient to need to undergo a bone graft or periodontal disease treatment before dental implant surgery. However, these extra procedures will increase the total amount of time it takes for you to get dental implants.
Placement of the Implant Posts
The surgery to implant the fixtures into the jaw bone will take place at our Frederick, MD, dental office. First, our dental implant specialist will make a small incision in your gums. The incision will allow us to place the titanium screws into the jaw bone.
If you are having a two-stage procedure, Dr. Goyal will close the gums back up afterwards and let them heal. If you are getting a one-stage procedure, he will attach a healing cap to the dental implants. The healing cap will make sure the gums do not heal over top of the posts.
Regardless of which procedure you get, the implant posts will need time to fuse with your jaw bone. It can take anywhere from three to six months for the dental implant to fuse with the surrounding bone. It’s key to let the healing process, or osseointegration, occur on its own time.
The success of dental implant osseointegration is important for the long-term functionality and durability of your new dental prosthetic. Once osseointegration is successful, the implant acts as an artificial tooth root and we can attach the abutment.
Placement of the abutment
The abutment is the piece that secures the final prosthetic to the implant post. If you have a two-stage procedure, then Dr. Goyal will open the gums back up to place the permanent abutments. After that, you will need to wait a few more weeks to give the soft gum tissues time to fully heal.
If you have a one-stage procedure, Dr. Goyal will simply remove the healing cap and place the permanent abutment. No more incisions are necessary. Once the abutment is in place, he can attach the final prosthetic or dental restoration.
Attaching the Dental Restoration
During your last appointment, our Frederick dentist will attach your new dental restoration! The type you need depends on how many teeth you are missing. We can attach a crown, bridges or dentures. There are also several different ways that we can secure your new artificial teeth to the abutments.
Some prosthetics will snap into place. For example, you will need to remove snap-on-dentures daily for cleaning. We can permanently screw other options into place. Only a dentist can remove these options.
