This way, your treatment will be more streamlined and efficient. If you choose to replace your missing teeth with dental implants, we will explain every step of the process for you and give you an accurate timeline so you will know what to expect.
The Dental Implant Process
You should expect the entire process to be longer than any other teeth replacement solution. This is because it is an invasive process that requires at least one surgical procedure, many appointments, and lots of healing time. To qualify for teeth implants, you should be in good overall health, free from additional dental issues, and have enough bone tissue to support the fixtures. Additionally, if you smoke, we highly recommend quitting because smoking significantly raises your risk of implant failure.
Consultation
The purpose of the consultation is for the dentist to examine your mouth and medical history to determine if you qualify for dental implants. The current state of your oral health is also very important. If problems such gums disease or bone loss is discovered, then they will need to be treated first. It is not abnormal for a patient to need to undergo a bone graft or periodontal disease treatment before being able to move on to having the implant fixtures surgically placed in the jaw. However, these extra procedures will increase the total cost of your treatment and the total amount of time it takes.
Placement of the Implant Posts
The surgery to implant the fixtures into the jaw bone will take place at our Frederick, MD dentist office. Dr. Goyal will make a small incision in the gums at each location and place the titanium screws into the jaw bone. If you are having a two-stage procedure done, Dr. Goyal will close the gums back up afterwards and let them heal. If you are having a one-stage procedure done, the dentist will attach a healing cap to the dental implants to make sure the gums do not heal over top of them. Regardless of which procedure you have done, the implant posts will be left alone to fuse with the jaw bone during a process called osseointegration. This can take anywhere from three to six months.
Placement of the abutment
If you have a two-stage procedure done, then Dr. Goyal will need to open the gums back up to place the permanent abutments. After that is completed, you will need to wait a few more weeks to give the soft tissues time to fully heal. If you have a one-stage procedure completed, Dr. Goyal will simply remove the healing cap and place the permanent abutment. No incisions are necessary.
Attaching the Dental Restoration
During your last appointment, your Frederick, MD dentist will attach your new dental restoration. The type you need depends on how many teeth you are missing. There are also several different ways your teeth can be attached. Some will snap into place and need to remove daily for cleaning while others are permanently screwed into place and can only be removed by a dentist.
